Work to demolish The Black Cat Café, an unsafe and derelict building in Lozells, which is causing an eyesore to the local community, will begin this week.
The café, at 84-88 Villa Road, has lain derelict for a number years, and is now set to be demolished due to its failing structural integrity in order to protect public safety.
A wider Black Cat Development project is considering options for the redevelopment of up to one acre of commercial and council owned land at the junction of Villa and Hamstead Roads, including the café site.
Community consultation staged in February/March and July 2009 asked local stakeholders to consider three possible options for the area, including the establishment of a dedicated area for food and specialist catering businesses.
Work to further develop these ideas, and liaise with other landowners already present on the site, is continuing.
Demolition work on the Black Cat Café will begin with scaffolding being erected and internal works to make the site secure, before full-scale demolition takes place with a view to the site being cleared by December.
Safety hoardings will be placed round the site during works.
