Pay award sparks fury (The Birmingham Mail, page 18): Centro criticised by Tax Payers’ Alliance for awarding its chief exec Geoff Inskip a £24,000-a-year pay rise. Total salary is now £155,000.
Party leaders face defiance (The Birmingham Mail, page 6)): Midland MPs threaten to challenge expenses inquiry for being “riddled with errors”. Lynne Jones, Adrian Bailey, Lorely Burt and Peter Luff quoted.
Region is worst for unemployment (BBC Midlands Today/ITV Central): West Midlands has highest unemployment rate in country. Report quotes 281,000 people are out of work. More than ten per cent (10.4 per cent) unemployed in Birmingham with under 24s worst hit (one in three are now unemployed in this age group). Jim Knight interviewed on ITV saying focus of effort is on young people.
Staffordshire Hoard leaves Birmingham (BBC Midlands Today): Treasure is on the way to London to be evaluated. More than 65,000 people came to see it at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
More soldiers to be sent to Afghanistan (ITV Central): Prime Minister sending a further 500 troops to Afghanistan. So far 17 soldiers from the West Midlands have died since July.
