Runway extension highest priority for region

Chief Executive Stephen Hughes reiterates the city council’s commitment to the Birmingham Airport Runway Extension.

ce9You may have been concerned to read newsaper reports last week about the status of the runway extension.  I want  to let you know that this remains one of the highest public sector priorities for the region, and in particular, the District Council shareholders who own about half the airport remain determined to deliver the project.

Many aspects of the project are progressing well.  Planning permission has been granted and the airport company has spent money developing the detailed design plans.  AWM will of course speak for themselves, but I am clear that they remain fully supportive of the project and as determined as the District Councils are to see this major boost for the regional economy go ahead.

There are some complex technicalities involved in getting public support for the project.  We are aware of them and have developed options that will resolve those issues, but they do require detailed and specialised advice before they can be finalised.

Councillor Mike Whitby, Leader of Birmingham City Council, remains a determined champion for the project.  He has asked me to take personal responsibility for ensuring that it is delivered.  I have the full support of the other District Chief Executives in that role.

I remain confident that, with the goodwill of all the relevant parties, the runway extension and the significant benefits to the region it will release will be delivered.
