Nice line Kris but as to learning anything I very much doubt that. The above dialogue is so defensive, void of any want to understand any other than praise and congratulation. I feel sure you will remain content that you are so right and I have no business to offer up any opinion whatsoever. Case of not seeing the trees due to the want of the cheesy smiles and ribbon cutting.
Mike,
I am very disappointed to read your thoughts on the city council coverage of the local elections.
We put a lot of hard work and effort into this – with blogs from the elections office, news releases and lots of statistical information placed within the Elections 2010 section of http://www.birminghamnewsroom.com in the run up to election day.
Our in-depth elections media briefing pack was available for the entire world to view for the first time ever. Previously this had only been distributed to members of the traditional media on election results night.
I also read with interest and amusement the comment about us being in competition with the BBC, meaning our coverage seemed sub-par in some way.
Interestingly, I tried to find a ward-by-ward breakdown of the local election results on other websites. Not that easy to find I am afraid.
Couple all of this with the fact that besides BBC WM, no other local broadcast media – TV or radio – were present at the local count, and there was clearly a very good reason for us to have the live video stream, blog and results service – which trounced almost everything else offered to taxpayers locally.
The feedback so far has been largely positive but we will be inviting comments from the 2,000 or so audience for our election coverage to learn any lessons for future coverage.

Josh T you’re right my spelling and grammar is awful (failed my 11 plus). The Broad Street www welcomes any comment for improvement; you will find we don’t immediately go into a denial, defense mode. We certainly wouldn’t post up spurious comments knocking the knocker. In any event “Josh T” none of this can excuse Britain’s largest local authority producing anything but the best. Olley does not or indeed never has worked for BCC, bet you do and you are not using your own name, are you…!!!
Personally I’d like to thank you guys for the election coverage, especially your work through the night on Thurs/Fri. I check this website most days and find it really helpful.
Regarding the critical comment, is that the Mike Olley from Broad Street? Thought he worked for the council. If it is the same guy, the Latest News section on his website only contains links to pdf files – so hardly an expert! http://www.broadstreetbid.co.uk/flash/news.html Oh and I think he means site not sight. And as for the white writing on the black background… I could go on.
Sorry you felt that Mike, the live blogging – with factual data – was new to us this year, so we would hope to take a step further with analysis and comment in coming years.

Election Results
Disappointed with the sight, bland process data which lacks any statistical pointers or break downs of recent events, poor navigation and directional tools. Lacks any imagination and umph. Video is essentially dull when in a void as it is on the site, the effort and cost of producing quality video needs supplementary information to drive the user deeper into the site. BCC must bear in mind they are in competition with BBC and the City fails dismally in that respect. Such a pity when there are a wealth of qualitative officers within the City.
Need to do a lot better with my tax sterling please..!!
