Works of art from Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery’s world famous collections will go on display at galleries across the globe over the next few months.
With Birmingham bidding to be the UK’s first City of Culture, BMAG promotes the city on the international stage by loaning works to some of the most significant museums in the world.
That means works by the likes Degas, Millais and Pissarro are set to go on display in Williamstown, Barcelona, Venice and Rouen.
And Cllr Martin Mullaney, chair of the Birmingham Cultural Partnership, believes the ongoing programme of international loans underlines Birmingham’s standing on the world arts stage.
He said: “Many people are already aware that organisations like Birmingham Royal Ballet regularly promote our city with performances all over the world. What is possibly less widely known is that works of art – particularly from our world famous Pre-Raphaelite collection – also go on display in some very prestigious museums and art galleries.
“Over the last 12 months we’ve had works of art on display in the Louvre and Spain’s world famous Alhambra, so this programme certainly enhances our reputation as a cultural centre
“As we draw up the final UK City of Culture bid, it is vital that we reflect everything from community activities at grassroots level right up to programmes like this that promote the city all over the world.”
