Birmingham appeals for digital time capsule images

If you’ve ever wanted to make a magic moment last for ever, now’s your chance.

Digital Birmingham is appealing for residents, businesses, families, schools and charities to add their ‘digital memories’ to an online time capsule called “Our Digital City – this is us in 2010”. The aim is to get around 5000 uploads of still images, videos, audio recordings or texts by the end of 2010 – Birmingham’s digital year.

Unlike traditional time capsules, this one won’t get buried and won’t need to be opened – but will be there for anyone to see at www.ourdigitalcity.me.uk any time of day, from anywhere in the world with an online connection.

The digital time capsule is being launched in Birmingham’s Victoria Square on Friday (June 23) from 10am to 4pm, where people will have the first opportunity to upload their digital images or recordings. The project is a joint venture between Digital Birmingham, Say Hello (part of Hello Digital) and  Birmingham Libraries, supported by Arts Council England.

“We’re looking for people and organisations to show us what’s important to them in 2010, how they live, work and play this year,” said Digital Birmingham’s innovation manager Annette King.

“We want to show the world what a digitally savvy city we’ve become and create ‘micro stories’ with everlasting snapshots of facts, memories, keepsakes and messages to be shared.

“It’s our opportunity to make Birmingham today memorable in the digital world of tomorrow by saying ‘We are here and this is our mark’.”

The website’s home screen is a rectangular grid of uploaded moments that is refreshed every hour. By clicking on any square in the grid, you’ll be able to see or hear the story of that image.

Digital images, video or audio files can be put into the time capsule, which will be open for entries for the rest of the year.  To find out more about the digital file formats and how they can be uploaded visit www.ourdigitalcity.me.uk.

The Switchover Help Scheme will also be on hand at the event in Victoria Square to offer eligible residents advice about how they can switch to digital TV. For more information please log onto www.helpscheme.co.uk
