Birmingham City Council will be entering the large city category in Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Heart of England in Bloom competition. This follows’ its gold win in the Urban Community category in 2009.
Birmingham will be judged on three core elements: horticultural achievement, environmental responsibility and community participation. RHS Heart of England in Bloom is the regional element of the national Britain in Bloom competition, the campaign annually attracts over 1,350 individual entries from small villages to large cities.
Birmingham City Council’s Parks & Nurseries team have a whole host of features lined up to showcase to the judges, which includes a new Coin Feature that is on display outside of St Philip’s, sponsored by the Colmore BID. The feature celebrates the first coin to be struck in Birmingham. A scaled down Spitfire feature (photo call), which was a part of the City’s award winning display at the Chelsea Flower Show, is on exhibit at Victoria Square.
The City will also see the return of last year’s favourites with the bright floral mini. Last year the mini was a very popular feature seen on Victoria Square, this year it will be placed out on the centre of Longbridge Traffic Island with the connection to the Rover Car Plant.
It has been constructed using an old Mini car shell, and the covered with hundreds of Carpet bed plants. Also the ever popular handbag, shoes and watch wicker features to name a few will be dotted around the city, alongside the Lunar ‘moon’ feature, will be displayed in the grounds of St Paul’s.
The City Centre Management team have also constructed a ‘living wall’ on part of the screen that surrounds the site of the new Library.
Cllr Martin Mullaney, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture, said: “I am very proud of the floral and greenery that thread throughout the city, they give an important statement by Birmingham that we want to make our urban scene an environmentally green one.”
Judging day will be on the 23 July.
