Dressing up as a knight in shining armour, medieval sword fighting lessons and a re-enactment of the Battle of Agincourt, will all be highlights of ‘Knight School’ at Blakesley Hall on Sunday 11 July (12-4pm), admission free.
Visitors will be able to learn how to become a medieval knight by trying on replica helmets, breastplates, gauntlets and chain mail shirts, taking part in sword fighting lessons and being trained in ‘medieval martial arts.’ Following the training, participants will be able to take part in a fun re-enactment of the Battle of Agincourt with children and adults on opposing sides.
The event is being taken by qualified fencing coach and stage combat artist Mark Vance. He has had over 15 years’ experience running his own Medieval Society, managing and presenting large scale re-enactment events for, amongst others, English Heritage, Blenheim Palace and Warwick Castle as well as work for several TV documentaries.
Councillor Martin Mullaney, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture said: “Knight School is a fun and entertaining event that will enable local people of all ages to discover more about life in medieval times. As we await the announcement for UK City of Culture we can be proud of community museums like Blakesley Hall, which are wonderful reminders of Birmingham’s magnificent cultural history”.
Blakesley Hall Museum is one of the few remaining timber framed buildings left in Birmingham. It was built in 1590 by Richard Smalbroke, a member of one of Birmingham’s leading merchant families.
