Council offer election canvassers cash incentive

Birmingham City Council is giving local residents the chance to earn some extra cash in time for Christmas by signing up as an electoral register canvasser.

The Council needs people to carry out door-to-door calls to get the information required to update the city’s Register of Electors, and canvassers can expect to earn around £300 for a few days work.

Every autumn the Electoral Registration Office posts forms to all properties in Birmingham to create a new electoral roll. Residents are required to confirm their details or to inform the office of any changes, such as a child who has turned 18 since the last canvass in 2009.

Follow up forms are sent to those who do not complete the original form to remind them that to be able to vote in upcoming elections they need to register their details.

Canvassers are then employed to make personal visits to the homes of the residents who have still not sent their particulars by freephone, text, online or via post.

The first canvassing sessions will begin on Thursday 14th October 2010, and commence on Wednesday 27th October 2010. Each canvass area will have around 250–300 properties requiring a visit.

Robert Connelly, Elections Manager, said: “Not only is the canvass vital in helping ensuring everyone in the city is on the register and able to exercise their democratic rights to vote, but it can also provide a much needed cash bonus to those who come forward to help us.”

Canvassers must visit their allocated households up to five times during the canvassing period to obtain the necessary information from a responsible adult at the address.

Canvassers will be fully trained and receive £1.15 per completed form they collect and £20 for training.

Vacancies are still available in the following areas; Aston, Bartley Green, Edgbaston, Hodge Hill, Kingsbury, Ladywood, Small Heath, Sparkbrook, Sparkhill and Washwood Heath.

Further information and how to apply for a canvasser role in theses areas can be found on the Council’s website: www.birmingham.gov.uk/elections
