Mixed heritage adoption call

A call has been made for people to come forward and adopt Muslim children of mixed ethnicity who, according to officials, are being overlooked by Birmingham families that express an interest in adoption.

Birmingham City Council’s adoption and fostering service says it’s experiencing a growing number of children from this “super diverse” background coming into care.

The trend is a reflection of the merging cultures within the city and its evolving demographic.

Operations manager for adoption Helen French said: “Birmingham is increasingly diverse with children from a variety of ethnicities and religions.

“This diversity is one of the city’s strengths, but it also presents challenges for the Council’s adoption and fostering service. Children we increasingly have difficulty matching applicants to are Muslim children of mixed ethnicity.

“With Ramadan upon us, I am appealing for people to come forward and help provide a happy home for these children.”

Super diverse children waiting for adoption have birth parents with a combination of African, Caribbean, South Asian, European and British backgrounds.

Potential candidates who are Muslim and of mixed ethnicity or live with a spouse or partner of different ethnic background to their own are particularly sought.

More important, however, is an ability to demonstrate an understanding and willingness to promote different cultures and religions.

Officers from the adoption and fostering service plan to visit Mosques and community groups across the city as part of the recruitment drive.

Anyone wanting to enquire about adopting a child, or able to help find suitable potential adopters, call the service on 0121 303 7575 or email a&frecruit@birmingham.gov.uk.
