‘Birmingham’s Best Balti’ competition heats up

Chefs from across Birmingham, including the city’s famous Balti Triangle, are set to spice things up this winter as they battle it out to be crowned the creator of Birmingham’s Best Balti.

The competition, organised by Birmingham City Council, returns for its second year and challenges local restaurants to create the perfect Asian dish inspired by the history, people and culture of the city – and that tastes fantastic!

Open to restaurants, takeaways and other food outlets, the winning entrant will this year not only receive the title of Birmingham’s Best Balti, but will also become one of the council’s approved suppliers of Asian cuisine (subject to terms and conditions).

Entries must be completed by the 26th November 2010, and the restaurants that are short-listed will then be inspected and evaluated before the ensuing cook-off in the New Year.

Cllr Timothy Huxtable, Cabinet Member for Transportation and Regeneration said: “Birmingham is famous for its wide range of delicious curries, and this is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the culinary talents that the city has to offer.

“In the Balti Triangle and across the city there are numerous quality restaurants, so we fully expect it to be a tough competition with all entries of a high standard.”

This year’s judges are Luke Tipping, executive chef at Simpsons, Birmingham’s Michelin-starred restaurant, and Aktar Islam, chef director of Lasan restaurant, who was recently seen as the triumphant winner of Gordon Ramsey’s F-word competition.

They will be joined by Paul Fulford, restaurant critic for the Birmingham Mail, and a representative from Civic Catering, the council’s official caterers.

Last year’s inaugural competition was launched as part of the council’s £1m Tornado Recovery Programme, set up to rejuvenate the Sparkbrook area following the 2005 natural disaster, and was won by Grameen Khana with their ‘Grameen’s chicken balti.’
