A record breaking 14,650 runners have signed-up for the EDF Energy Birmingham Half Marathon – almost double the number of entrants for the inaugural event two years ago.
And Birmingham City Council Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture Cllr Martin Mullaney believes the Birmingham Half Marathon will soon be attracting over 20,000 runners.
A field of 8,000 runners tackled the 13.1 mile course in 2008, with 12,000 entrants a year later. The figure has increased again this year as the event becomes firmly established in the running calendar.
Cllr Mullaney said: “The plan was always for this event to grow year on year and to have almost 15,000 runners just two years after the half marathon was launched is a terrific achievement.
“With a high number of returning entrants this is clearly a popular event and I’m sure we’ll soon be regularly seeing over 20,000 runners taking to the city streets for the Birmingham Half Marathon.
“We’ve also had over 500 volunteers to help on the day and now we just need the people of Birmingham to come out in force on the day and cheer on this year’s runners.”
The 2010 EDF Energy Birmingham Half Marathon takes place on October 24.
