Birmingham’s free annual Diwali celebrations will this year be taking place in the National Indoor Arena (NIA) on Sunday 31st October from 2-8pm.
The event provides an opportunity to celebrate one of the most important festivals in the Indian calendar. The event will include an exciting range of dancers and visual artists, stalls, and a charity firewalk to raise money for the National Sewa Day.
The Diwali event is organised by the Hindu Council of Birmingham with support from Birmingham City Council, also in association with BBC Asian Network, BBC WM and BBC Midlands Today. For more details log on to www.hcb.org or www.birmingham.gov.uk/diwali

Diwali is the biggest celebration in the Hindu calendar, and is traditionally celebrated in India with a five day festival, which includes the familiar “Festival of Lights” on the third day.
The date of Diwali changes each year as it is dependent on the cycle of the moon – the celebration is held on the first Amavasya (no moon day) in the month of Kartik (October/November in the Western calendar). Diwali in 2010 falls on 5th November.
The Hindu Council of Birmingham, aims include:
- Promoting the Hindu Culture and the education of Hindus
- Providing advice and information for local, Public Authorities and Government Departments
- Acting as an Umbrella Organisation to the Affiliated Organisations (Sansthas)
National Sewa Day a social action initiative organised by Sewa UK. The day takes place on 21st November 2010, it has over 100 diverse organisations participating in it, with approximately 5,000 people engaged in addressing issues connected with deprivation and disadvantage. Sewa UK raises money to rebuild communities struck by natural disasters and humanitarian tragedies in India. They build schools, fund education projects, improve healthcare facilities, and reach out to lend a helping hand. In the ancient Indian language of Sanskrit, Sewa means selfless service. Sewa UK is a secular, non-political UK registered charity.
