New initiatives to expand recycling in Birmingham has been launched today, aimed at encouraging businesses and residents to recycle even more of their unwanted goods.
An innovative service for city centre businesses allows waste cardboard to be easily recycled. Businesses can purchase special ‘city council’ tape to wrap their cardboard and simply leave outside for daily collection.
And residents will be able to find out how to recycle everything from paper and glass to mobile phones, and where items can be reused through local charity shops in their neighbourhood, with the launch of the new Recycling & Reuse Roadmaps.
Roadmaps will be available in local charity shops and neighbourhood offices, and are also available online: www.bebirmingham.org.uk/recyclingmap
Both these initiatives aim to make recycling even easier for residents and businesses in the city, diverting waste from landfill, protecting local jobs and the environment, and saving the city millions of pounds.
Cllr Timothy Huxtable, Cabinet Member for Transportation and Regeneration, said: “Birmingham’s recycling rate has tripled in the last ten years but there is still room for improvement. I welcome these initiatives for helping businesses and residents to recycle more, and would encourage them to take full advantage of these new services.”
Connor Barry, General Manager Ladywood Furniture Project said:
“It’s really exciting that the people of Birmingham can now easily find out exactly what recycling facilities – whether charity shops, reuse depots or household recycling centres – are available in their community.”
