Conference News: Birmingham Highlights

Birmingham is getting ready for a packed itinerary in the city this week, as it hosts the Conservative Party for its annual autumn conference.  With up to 14,000 delegates attending, including over 2,000 media, organisations across Birmingham have worked together to ensure a comprehensive programme of events and activities is in place to maximise its position as conference host.

The programme will kick off with a Birmingham Reception hosted by think tank Centre for Cities on Sunday evening (3rd Oct) at The Waterhall, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, headlined by Cllr Mike Whitby, Leader of Birmingham City Council, and Rt Hon Eric Pickles MP, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government.

On Monday (4th Oct) Birmingham City Council and local government think tank Localis will launch a report that focuses on innovative public programmes in Birmingham which align with David Cameron’s Big Society.  Entitled ‘Total Neighbourhood: What role for local government in the Big Society?’

The day will also see the release of an ICM report, commissioned by Marketing Birmingham, surveying 505 business people at manager level and above, on what they thought about the state of the economy and what Government priorities should be to stimulate growth moving forward.

Cllr Timothy Huxtable, Cabinet Member for Regeneration at Birmingham City Council will speak at the launch of a KPMG report commissioned by CENTRO looking at the regional benefits of High Speed Rail to the wider region.

On Tuesday (5th Oct) Ed Vaizey MP, Minister for Culture, Communications and Creative Industries, will take a tour of the Library of Birmingham development site to coincide with an announcement on the £193m project’s future operating model. The Minister will also visit the new Zellig development for creative industries at the Custard Factory and the opening of an exhibition at Snow Hill, featuring the photographic work of Brian Griffin.

Chief Executive of Birmingham City Council, Stephen Hughes, will speak at a key fringe event on Tuesday evening on the role of ADZs/TIFs – urging Government to push ahead with implementation using Birmingham as a pilot scheme.
 
Tuesday evening will see a new partnership between Birmingham Science Park Aston and Cisco Systems announced at a fringe event which looks at a business partnership that will provide access to global finances and research through ‘Science Parks without walls: Using digital connectivity to spark innovation-led growth and regeneration’.
