Ennis and Bolt head awards shortlist

UK athletics golden girl Jessica Ennis and fastest man on the planet Usain Bolt head the list of nominees for the Commonwealth Sports Awards to be hosted in Birmingham next month.

Double Olympic gold medallist Bolt heads the list in the outstanding male category and he will be hoping to retain the title that he won last year.

World and European champion heptathlete Ennis is nominated in the outstanding female category after another golden summer.

The New Zealand All Whites footballers are shortlisted in the outstanding team category after pulling off one of the shock results of this year’s World Cup when they held reigning champions Italy to a 1-1 draw.

The 29th Commonwealth Sports Awards Dinner will be held at the ICC in Birmingham on 6 November.

Tickets and sponsorship packages are still available for the event and anyone interested should contact Garry Peal on 0121 675 2799 or garry.peal@birmingham.gov.uk

Launched in 1980, the awards honour the achievements of sportsmen and women from across the Commonwealth and previous winners include Denise Lewis, Brian Lara, Dwight Yorke, Lennox Lewis, Michael Owen, Joe Calzaghe, Chris Hoy and Paula Radcliffe.

Looking ahead to next month’s dinner, founder of the Commonwealth Sports Awards Al Hamilton said: “I’m excited to bring the awards to Birmingham and we can look forward to saluting the great and the good of Commonwealth sport.

“Over the years these awards have recognised some real superstars but also many, many unsung heroes. The awards look to celebrate discipline, dedication and devotion throughout the Commonwealth.”
