Work to complete a £1.2 million overhaul of a unique Birmingham community, delivering major improvements to the areas’ shops, homes and facilities for young people, has swung into action this week.
Due to be completed by early 2011 the regeneration of Frankley Centre, to the South West of Birmingham, will see Birmingham City Council making major improvements to the community’s shopping heart including; new shop signage and landscaping and a new car park with disabled access.
As well as improving conditions for local businesses the scheme will also see a new MUGA (Multi Use Games Area) built for younger people, new lighting, CCTV and security equipment and improved access installed for local residents.
Cllr Timothy Huxtable, Cabinet Member for Transportation and Regeneration, said: “Frankley is a perfect example of the many small, yet vibrant communities within Birmingham which underpin wider life in the city, and which we as a city Council are determined to support in any way possible.
“With this investment we believe we can help this community, and all those who live within it, to really prosper and be proud of what they have to offer moving forward.”
As well as a varied shopping centre housing national chain and independent stores alike, Frankley is also home to a school, community centre, library and hundreds of local residents.
Dellarease Kane, owner of the Deli on Arden Road, said:
“As a trader in Frankley I can’t wait for this work to be completed and have no doubt that it will really help attract lots more shoppers to the area. Add to that the new games area, car park, and landscaping work and you can’t help but be excited at how the area will look, feel and be to live in in the future.”
