Lionel Street reopened after incident

19:07: Roads reopened.

17:01: Birmingham Resilience Team (BRT) has been informed of an incident in Lionel Street involving reports by BT maintenance staff of an unexplained smell coming from a tunnel. Key information at present is as follows:

Fire and Police are at the scene. (No casualties reported and no evacuation of nearby buildings).

Police have closed Lionel Street from the junction of Ludgate Hill to the junction of Newhall St.

The Fire service have activated specialised personnel who are taking samples and investigations are ongoing.

A BRT officer has attended the scene and we are in regular communication with police and fire controls.

The www.birminghamprepared.gov.uk website has been updated about the incident and a Birmingham Community Alert message has also been sent to people registered in that area, advising of road disruption to Lionel Street.
 
Due to the complexity of the tunnel structure and conditions, the Fire service investigations are ongoing and currently there is no estimated time for the inident to end.

BRT is liaising with the council’s highways team and will continue to liaise with Police and Fire both at the scene and with emergency service control rooms.

1631: The fire service has requested a closure of Lionel Street, Birmingham City Centre and the surrounding roads, due to an incident.  

The incident is due to an unexplained smell in one of the tunnels.  This is being investigated and we understand the area will be re-opened shortly.  The exact closure in Lionel Street from the junction of Ludgate Hill and Newhall Street.

We do not have an estimated duration of this closure at the present time.
