Official opening of Calthorpe Park interactive play zone

Date:  Friday 22rd October 2010

Time: 2.30pm

Location: Calthorpe Park, Edward Road, Balsall Heath, Birmingham, B12 9LF

What: Cllr Shokat Ali and Cllr Tanveer Choudhry join local school children at the opening of a lottery-funded play area at Calthorpe Park

An exciting new interactive play area at Calthorpe Park will be put through its paces by children from Percy Shurmer Local Primary School at its grand unveiling this Friday 22nd October.

The new play zone in Balsall Heath will then be open for public use, and as well as normal playground apparatus such as swings and slides it will have a natural play area alongside it, where trees, bushes and mud patches have been left for the children to play amongst.

The playground will benefit up to 20,000 children per year. It was created and its creation was possible because of funding from the Big Lottery Fund’s Children’s Play initiative, which allocated £3.3m to Birmingham City Council to develop a range of local play projects, known as the Birmingham Play portfolio.

Councillor Martin Mullaney, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture said: “Play is such an important aspect of young people’s development and I’m delighted that we, along with the Big Lottery Play programme, have been able to construct this wonderful facility for local children to enjoy.”

The £65,000 project saw Birmingham City Council’s Landscape Practice group consulting with local children and community groups to produce designs for the play area.

Phase two of the programme will begin in November, again funded by the Big Lottery Fund. The disused tennis courts on the Pershore Road side of the park will be redeveloped into a multi use games area with a natural play zone adjacent.

The Birmingham Play portfolio was launched in October 2008 and is due to be completed in October 2011.
