Leader Mike Whitby welcomed the news during the chancellor’s speech that the Midland Metro will be extended to New Street station.
“This is great news for Birmingham and the city region and I warmly welcome what the Chancellor said during the CSR speech,” he said.
“With New Street Gateway once again getting the Chancellor’s approval, funding for the airport extension looking close, our Highways PFI with AMEY paying dividends, and now the news that we can link up two city centre railway stations we are confident of building a quality integrated transport scheme.
“When we add to this the Government’s commitment to build high speed rail direct into Birmingham then we begin to see the foundations of a very powerful transport offer that will underpin the future prosperity of Birmingham, and the region, and gives us the fighting chance to rejuvenate our economy and add to the UK growth agenda for the long-term.”
