Time running out to register to vote

Residents across Birmingham have until Monday 11th October 2010 to respond to registration forms for the city’s new electoral register before canvassers will be doing door-to-door calls for information.

Birmingham City Council have sent reminder forms to the 162,394 households across the city that have yet to update their details to enable them to vote in upcoming elections.

Residents need to confirm their details with the council’s Election Office. This can be done by phone, text or online, which is a free service, or by returning the form by post if changes are to be made, for example a child turning 18.

Properties that do not respond will be visited by canvassers from Thursday 14th October, who will go door-to-door to collect the information needed to construct the electoral role.

Robert Connelly, Head of Electoral Services for the council, said:

“Registering to vote is simple, quick and easy and allows you to have a say in who represents you and makes decisions on your behalf in Government.

“Residents, and particularly many in Ladywood and Nechells who have yet to confirm or update their details, will be visited by canvassers from next Thursday if forms are not returned by Monday evening.”

As well as affecting a resident’s ability to vote, failure to respond can lead to problems obtaining credit. Many credit companies, banks and phone operators use the electoral roll as a primary source to check a customers’ identify when conducting a credit report, and not appearing on the register could hamper chances of attaining credit.
