A newly completed extra care housing scheme for Birmingham’s older people is to open its doors for viewing on 21 October.
Westhall Court in Sheldon Heath Road will be open to the public between 1.00pm and 4.00pm to give anyone interested in finding out more about extra care housing an opportunity to have a look around. Staff from Housing 21 and Birmingham City Council will be on hand to answer any questions.
The development consists of 87 two bedroom flats either for rent or affordable shared ownership in a scheme which includes a communal lounge, hairdressing salon and restaurant. Extra care specialists Housing 21 will manage the scheme, providing 24 hour care and support along with the peace of mind of a court manager on-site. The first residents are expected to be able to move in during November.
Westhall Court is the first of two extra care schemes to open in Birmingham as part of a partnership between Birmingham City Council, Housing 21, the Homes & Communities Agency and Willmott Dixon Housing. A further scheme at Turves Green is due to complete next March.
Councillor John Lines, Cabinet Member for Housing at Birmingham City Council, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for our older people to see the kind of housing Birmingham is delivering. We are keen to give them as much choice as possible, and Westhall Court is one of many extra care schemes we are opening across the city. I would urge people to come and see this development and I guarantee they will be happy with the homes we provided.”
Julia Godwin, development programme manager for Housing 21 said: “Westhall Court is an exciting new development for older people. We are delighted to be able to show the local community what extra care housing is all about and I’m sure those coming to the open day will be impressed.”
To be eligible to apply for a home at Westhall Court, applicants must be aged 55 and over, need accommodation with everyday support to help them live independently or have a personal care need. Applicants will also need to live in Birmingham or have a strong local connection.
