Santa is coming to town on Saturday November 13 and will be joined by rock legend Roy Wood as the Birmingham Christmas Parade lights up the city.
Travelling in traditional Scandinavian sleighs with reindeers and elves, Santa will switch on the Christmas Lights as the parade of colourful Christmas characters and musicians makes its way through the city centre from Bullring to Brindleyplace via New Street, Corporation Street, St Phillips Cathedral, Colmore Row, through Victoria Square and Paradise Forum onto Broad Street.
The parade culminates in Brindleyplace where Kitts Green born Wood, a founder member of The Move, ELO and Wizzard, will receive his Walk of Stars plaque.
Featured highlights of the parade include Frost Queen, Christmas puddings, snowmen, fairies and Jack Frost. Pantomime characters from the Hippodrome and Crescent Theatre will also be in the parade. An illuminated smiley train, cycling panda bear, The Irish Pipes and Drums and Christmas Baubles are bound to please the crowds.
Santa’s reindeer with Rudolph will be in a petting pen in High Street from 1.00pm. Urban Canvas will be running family activity workshops run 11.00am – 1.00pm & 1.30pm – 3.30pm.
Also a Christmas Galleon show with have a go activities will be in Victoria Square (10.00am – 3.30pm) together with a funfair carousel. In St Phillips Cathedral Green on Colmore Row there will be a magical illuminated display including Christmas Puddings and Cinderella’s pumpkin (2.00pm – 5.30pm).
In Centenary Square, as the parade passes by, there will be a fantastic Heliosphere aerial display that will take your breath away. The parade ends at Brindleyplace. Roy Wood will be presented with his Walk of Stars plaque at the BRMB stage, and the event will end with a five minute fireworks display. The Christmas Parade is organised by Birmingham City Council.
Cllr Martin Mullaney, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport & Culture said, “The free Birmingham Christmas Parade is just one of many events on offer over the coming weeks organised by Birmingham City Council, enabling everyone to enjoy the Christmas season whatever their budget.”
