The level of outstanding arrears needs to be considered in context to the level of Council Tax levied for the same period, which was £4,893m.
Thus the current level of arrears outstanding equates to 1.41% of the debit raised.
Birmingham City Council is acutely aware of the need and responsibility to ensure all possible avenues of collection are explored to actively pursue and collect outstanding Council Tax payments.
As such we engage in a wide range of recovery processes to this end, including the use of Tracing Agents to obtain details of those individuals who have moved without informing the City of their new address, the use of Bailiffs, Charging Orders and where appropriate Court action including Committal hearing.
The use of such action has so far this year yielded a reduction in the arrears position of £16.6m (this is an improvement of nearly £5m on the same position last year) and it is projected that this figure will rise to £23m by the end of this financial year.
