Refuse collection update: Jan 10

As efforts continue to return refuse collection services to normal as quickly as possible, Birmingham City Council has asked residents to help by only putting out fresh waste on their scheduled collection day.

This comes after 282,000 black bags of rubbish were collected across the city over the weekend by a fleet of casual collection crews recruited to help deal with the ongoing situation.

Stats (Jan 8/9)

  • Over 200 members of staff
  • 70 vehicles
  • 1,410 tonnes collected
  • 282,000 black bags

The ongoing clean-up operation means the vast majority of the backlog has now been collected, with casual crews continuing to deal with isolated cases where a backlog remains.

Almost 70 crews were out in force across the city today to:

  • Complete scheduled collections
  • Continue mopping up the rapidly diminishing backlog

Significant amounts of extra waste have also been deposited at the city’s five Household Recycling Centres (HRCs), where visitor numbers have more than doubled over the past week thanks to extended opening hours from 8am to 9pm everyday.

For the fortnight beginning 20th December 2010, 1309 tonnes of waste was deposited at the city’s HRCs – this compares to 1,054 tonnes in 2009-10 – an increase of 24%.
