Birmingham Gets A New Carnival Queen

Birmingham Carnival QueenThe excitement of Carnival stepped up a gear this week-end with the crowning of Birmingham’s new Carnival Queen.

22-year-old call centre worker, Lexi-Kimberley Maye, won the competition after wowing judges with her confident personality and energetic dance routines.

The event took place on Sunday evening at the The Drum in Aston.  Sancia Parkinson, who was the last Carnival Queen for the city in 2009, was there to wish Lexi-Kimberley good luck and to hand over the Carnival Queen sash and crown.

Lexi-Kimberley, said, “I am so excited. I entered this competition 2 years ago and didn’t win. I was determined to have another go and am so thrilled to have won. Carnival is such a vibrant event for the city.  It brings communities together and gives everyone the chance to have fun.  I can’t wait until 7th August.”

Lexi-Kimberley will now be the official face of Carnival 2011 and on Carnival day, on Sunday 7th August, will lead a spectacular procession of decorated floats, steel bands and Carnival troupes from Holyhead School in Milestone Lane all the way to Handsworth Park, where the day long celebrations will take place.

Twenty three year old Nicky Griffiths came second, with 20 year old Simone Cunningham following in third place.
