Birmingham City Council’s cabinet will this Monday (25th July) be asked to approve a bid to Government for funding toward a £10.6million package of improvements to ease congestion on one of the city’s busiest roads.
The A452 Chester Road serves as a strategic link between the M6 Junction 5, Tyburn Road and the Fort Parkway. As well as reducing congestion and helping to improve traffic flow on the road, the bid also contains plans to provide improved pedestrian crossings, cycling facilities and improve the journey times for public transport in the area.
Councillor Timothy Huxtable, Cabinet Member for Transport, Environment and Regeneration, said: “These improvements would bring great benefits to local residents, commuters and business alike by easing congestion, reducing travel times and making the whole area far more accessible.”
The area of the Chester Road between Tyburn Road and the M6 Junction 5 runs through the north-east of Birmingham and is heavily used by local and through traffic.
A significant number of accidents have occurred on the Chester Road, with 195 recorded incidents between the 1st January 2006 and 31st December 2010. Congestion can add significantly to business costs and can deter future and existing businesses from investing in the area.
If the bid is successful, the Department for Transport will provide approximately £8.6million toward the scheme with local partners contributing the remaining £2million.

Nice how about putting some of the bus services back on, open some service road links that were closed in Castle Bromwich itself…..and actually put a proper camber back on the road. Driving down the Chester Road through Castle Bromwich to Kingshurt it suffers flooding because of the poor camber. You would also ease congestion down by the Fort with a much improved bus service and put the spitfire island on lights to control the flow.
Castle Bromwich suffers neglect because Solihull is seen as the bees knees….
Oh and when were the residents of which I am one actually going to be told….???? we are hemmed in as it is with road works
