Councillor Alan Rudge – response to disorder

In response to plans to meet community groups over the coming days, Councillor Alan Rudge, cabinet member for equalities and human resources, said: “I am saddened and disgusted by the actions of the mindless people who have caused the disturbances in Birmingham over the past few days, which are nothing more than acts of criminality and greed by individuals who have no respect for the city or its people, neighbourhoods within the city and the rule of law.

“I am particularly disturbed by the incident this morning that led to the deaths of three young men and my thoughts, and those of my colleagues, are with the families of those who died this morning.

“I will be meeting with members of the local community to discuss these events and to listen to their concerns.  I understand that whilst these events are utterly deplorable we must show calm, restraint and solidarity within and between our communities to ensure that the city returns to normal and the police can continue with their operations to bring those responsible to justice.

“It has been encouraging to see the vast majority of Birmingham citizens deploring these acts of criminality and the positive public reaction in coming together to help local businesses and communities clean up the mess.

“Whilst I do understand that people would wish to, and have a right to, defend their properties and places of worship, this must be done with extreme caution and in collaboration with the police.

“Birmingham City Council together with West Midlands Police and our communities will continue to work together to ensure the citizens of Birmingham remain safe and secure and that these appalling acts of vandalism come to an end.”
