artsfest – the UK’s biggest free arts festival, got off to a fantastic start with over 100,000 people enjoying a day of art, music, theatre, dance, storytelling and the city’s first ever FlowerFest.
The city centre swayed to Souled out 2 Funk at the Yardbird Jazz Club and crowds in Chamberlain Square enjoyed the Latin-infused Zumba Central dance workout. In the afternoon the lyrical folk of Pan & The Poet and Charlie and the Martyrs drew crowds in Centenary Square. The inclement weather didn’t stop the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the Birmingham Opera Company, as they performed to a capacity crowd who braved the storms. The show culminated with a stunning fireworks display choreographed to Wagner’s dramatic Ride of the Valkyries.
Cllr Martin Mullaney, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture said: “The first day of artsfest has been a real success. There has been a wide spectrum of events and activities ranging from the Classical Fantasia concert, theatrical performances to the festival’s debut event of FlowerFest. There really has been something for everyone, no matter what their age or cultural background.”
Birmingham Town Hall saw hundreds of visitors experience an uplifting performance by the Town Hall Gospel Choir, while the Museum & Art Gallery hosted medieval mystery plays, family friendly storytelling and an eclectic mix of music including the sounds of the Birmingham Laptop Ensemble. Green fingered enthusiasts were able to enjoy FlowerFest, which took place in the city centre gardens. Crowds were delighted by a host of floral societies displaying the best of their plants and gardening experts were on-hand during the question and answer sessions.
Now in its 14th year, artsfest is the UK’s biggest free arts festival. It is organised by Birmingham City Council, with support from sponsors, partners, arts organisations and volunteers. For more information go to www.artsfest.org.uk or contact the artsfest team on 0121 464 5678.
