The majority of services at Birmingham City Council remained operational on Wednesday (21st September) despite the one-day industrial action planned by UNISON.
Final figures at the end of the day confirmed a total of 1084 employees had taken part in the industrial action, out of a total of 21,288 non-school staff.
Public facing services which remained open/operational included:
- BCC Contact centre
- Benefits service
- Bull Ring and Wholesale Markets
- Careline
- Central Library (Lending library, Children’s and Business Insight Centre)
- Community museums
- Parks and visitor centers
- Planning enquiries contact centre and reception
- Register Office
- Refuse and recycling collections
- School crossing patrols
- Trading standards and public health

Commenting on the UNISON action, Cllr Alan Rudge, Cabinet Member for Equalities and Human Resources said:
“Industrial action is always regrettable and disappointing but we have contingency plans in place for such outcomes – and they were proven to be effective as recently as this summer when the vast majority of city council services operated as usual when a similar one day strike was staged.”
