Birmingham will be searching for the next generation of Usain Bolts or Tyson Gays at a special ‘Athletics in the Square’ event in Victoria Square in the city centre this week (Monday 30 July – Friday 3 August).
Visitors to the city will be able to get into the spirit of the London 2012 Olympic Games and display their racing skills on a specially created 50m athletics track in Victoria Square, with special awards given to those with the fastest times in individual age groups from Under 11s to over 18s.
Throughout the week, representative from Birmingham Athletics Network will be assisting would be athletes with expert advice, coaching sessions and guidance in sprinting techniques as well as tips from members of Birchfield Harriers and Royal Sutton Athletics Club .
Participants will also be to enjoy watching screenings all of the action from the London 2012 Olympic Games on the Live Site in Victoria Square.
Sharon Lea, Strategic Director, Environment and Culture at Birmingham City Council said: “This wonderful event gives local people off all ages the opportunity join in with the national excitement surrounding the Olympic Games. It will be great entertainment for youngsters during the summer holidays and a fun way to find out about athletics and physical activity.
The Athletics in the Square track will be open to the public from 11.00am to 5pm on Monday 30 July – Friday 3 August (11.30am start on Monday). Admission is Free.
There will be plenty of information available throughout the week for visitors interested in getting involved with further athletics and physical activity.
