Birmingham City Council Cabinet Member for Equalities and Human Resources, Cllr Alan Rudge, will officially open a new viewing platform at Sarehole Mill on Thursday March 31.

The new platform and gently sloping path improves access to a secluded mill pool to the rear of the 200-year-old Grade II listed mill.

The £40,000 project also means all visitors, able and less able, can view the mill machinery at work.

Sarehole Mill is of only two surviving watermills in Birmingham. It is widely believed to have been the inspiration for J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings.

Cllr Rudge said: “This project has demonstrated the City Council’s ongoing commitment to preserving and enhancing its heritage.

“The new viewing platform means all visitors can now enjoy the full beauty of the mill and I can certainly recommend a visit to this wonderful historic site.”

Highlights at Sarehole Mill include:

  • The northwheel, mill gears and grinding stones on the first floor. These can be seen working on demonstration days.
  • The bakehouse with the original breadoven from the 1840s, large enough to hold 80 loaves of bread.
  • The Tolkien displays - Sarehole Mill is part of the Tolkien Trail, which follows the childhood footsteps of the author and the places that influenced his writing.
  • The secluded mill pool - occupied by all kinds of wildlife including moorhens, mallard and herons. Kingfishers are regular visitors. The surrounding woodland and Shire Country Park - a haven for birds and all kinds of wildlife.
