artsfest: Fantastic, fun and FREE

Cabinet Member for Leisure Sport and Culture Cllr Martin Mullaney looks ahead to a weekend of cultural gems in Birmingham.

So what are you up to this weekend?

How do you fancy two days of live music, theatre, dance, poetry and other cultural fun? Better still what if it's all free?

Well that's exactly what we have in store for you in Birmingham this weekend as the ever popular artsfest returns to the city's streets and cultural venues.

As I write this, over 3,000 artists are preparing to perform in over 600 events as part of this year’s artsfest - the UK's biggest free arts festival.

Last year's artsfest attracted over a quarter of a million visitors and this year's packed programme again provides a great opportunity for local people to see some of the city's world class arts organisations alongside new talent from the region.

You can see the full programme of events here and, whether you want to see The Guillemots at 'The Best of Birmingham with Kerrang! Radio and Q Radio' or enjoy something a little more sedate with FlowerFest at City Centre Gardens, I'm confident there's something for everyone.

Inspired by the UitMarkt festival in Amsterdam, artsfest was created in 1998 to 'excite and intrigue audiences' through showcases of the forthcoming autumn season and examples of the sheer magnitude of what was on offer by local artists year round.

It is one of many fantastic cultural events that help make Birmingham such a wonderful place to live and work.

Last weekend I was at the fantastic magnificent Moseley Folk Festival - another huge Birmingham success story. This weekend I'll be enjoying the fun at artsfest and I urge you all to come along and join me.
