Background and Prospects

Currently there are three councillors elected for each of the 40 wards in Birmingham (120 in total).  Elections involve a third of the seats (one in each of the 40 wards) each year and in every fourth year there is no election.  Councillors serve for four years so this year those who were elected in 2011 are standing down (and must seek re-election to remain on the council).

In 2018 Birmingham will be switching to all-out elections every four years, so those councillors elected this year will serve only a three year term until then.
