Be prepared – our emergency motto

Steve Grogan, Head of the Birmingham Resilience Team, looks forward to a speaking engagement that he has tomorrow at the Emergency Services Show 2009…

Steve Grogan - Head of the Birmingham Resilience TeamI was delighted to be offered the opportunity to present to a large and mixed audience of emergency services and resilience planning professionals about how in Birmingham we are working hard to make our city better prepared for emergencies.

My first thoughts were that I did not want to bore the audience to death by powerpoint.

My second thought was that I wanted to talk about how we are making Birmingham better prepared by focussing on things that do make a real difference and can be achieved in a realistic and sustainable way .

We can all talk about aspirational initiatives that cost lots of money or take up lots of resources, but I think people are fed up with lots of talk about unrealistic dreams.

I am therefore going to focus my presentation on the real things that we are actually doing – such as working with communities to make them better prepared for flooding, developing a ' Birmingham Community Alert Scheme' where we can inform citizens of impending or ongoing emergency incidents via SMS text messaging, email, fax or telephone voice messages.

Anyone interested and would like to hear more should come along to the show which is at Stoneleigh Park, Coventry. I am presenting 1.45pm tomorrow (Wednesday, November 25).
