Birmingham City Council and the Birmingham Health and Well Being Partnership are committed to encouraging more people in Birmingham to cycle more often. The cycling strategy sets out how we are aiming to achieve this.

    Lack of bike security is a big barrier to getting people to cycle to Birmingham for shopping or leisure. It would take a relativley small space in each council-owned car park to be available for secure bike storage.

    London Midland trains coming into the City have on average 2 to 4 bike spaces for a train that holds several hundred people. Because the bike spaces are not explicitly marked on the inside there is hostility to bike users from other train users. This may be very off-putting to somebody thinking of bringing a bike on to a trian to do part of the journey into the city.
    If Birmingham City Council could work with the train companies and station owners to make linking a bike and train journey a less intimidating experience i’m sure it would encourage more bike use.
