A free family day out with a difference is set to showcase an amazing range of sustainability, creativity – and fun.

The Birmingham Big Green Lunch takes place at Birmingham Botanical Gardens on Sunday June 2nd from 10am to 4pm, and is a fantastic opportunity for people in the city to enjoy a fun, eco-friendly, festival atmosphere.

Birmingham’s ambition is to be a leading green city, with a strong, friendly community built on sustainable principles, and the Big Green Lunch will provide a taste of life in a ‘green village’, for a few hours of food, friendship and fun, in the beautiful setting of Birmingham’s renowned Botanical Gardens.

Attractions will include:

• Music, dancing and entertainment on a Bandstand powered by a biodiesel generator, and delicious, healthy, locally grown food, reflecting Birmingham’s rich tradition of diversity

• Bollywood dancing and circus workshops, children’s games and a mini petting farm will be side by side with face painting, cup cake decorating and cookery demonstrations from the Love Food Hate Waste campaign

• The city’s long-established and acclaimed Fairtrade and Ethical Market will have a range of stalls to browse through and Carillion’s Energy Show will offer residents the chance to get energy-saving improvements through the Birmingham Energy Savers scheme.

And with a reminder that cycling is an increasingly important travel option in the city, there will be a chance to ride a penny farthing or try the Smoothie Bike (a stationary bike fitted with a special blender that spins as you pedal, mixing up delicious fruit smoothies!).

Cllr James McKay, Cabinet Member for a Green, Safe and Smart City said: ” Birmingham is determined to become one of the world’s greenest cities and we have already made big strides in this direction. The Big Green Lunch will mean that Birmingham residents have the chance to sample lots of different sustainable and eco-friendly activities in a fun and enjoyable setting. I hope lots of families go along for a great day out.”
