The new facility, which is a joint project between Birmingham City Council and British Cycling is part of the legacy programme for the World BMX Championships, which are being hosted at Birmingham's National Indoor Arena in May 2012.

Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sports and Culture, Councillor Martin Mullaney said: “The Birmingham BMX track is another world class sporting facility we can be extremely proud of.

“It will play host to some of the finest riders in the world later this month as part of a great summer of sport in Birmingham and I'm delighted world champion Shanaze Reade is joining us for the opening.”

Jonny Clay, Events Director of British Cycling added: “Birmingham now has a state of the art International BMX track that will allow generations of BMXers to enjoy the facility. We have enjoyed working with the city to get this track reinstated and look forward to bringing the World Championships to the city in 2012.”
