Birmingham Children’s Trust takes next step forward

A report setting out which services will be transferred to Birmingham Children’s Trust is to go to the city council’s cabinet.

The trust is currently in a ‘shadow’ period in order to test governance arrangements with the council, prior to full transition in April 2018. It will operate as a wholly-owned company.

As well as core services that will transfer via TUPE arrangements for staff, the report clarifies which support services will also transfer and which will be bought from the council.

And the trust board continues to take shape with five non-executive directors confirmed, following on from the announcements of the chief executive and chair.

Councillor Brigid Jones, cabinet member for children, families and schools, said: “This is all about ensuring there is a single focus on children’s care so we can consolidate improvements that are already underway.

“As Ofsted has recently confirmed, we are making steady progress and have taken some important steps in improving services for our children. We now want to make sure that improvement continues and is sustainable.

“Ultimately we want the best outcomes and a fantastic childhood for our children and young people and to do this we need to create the conditions that allow our best social workers to do great work, alongside our partners and the families they work with.

“To this end we have been working really closely with our staff, our partners and unions, ensuring we keep everyone fully informed about these important changes, so they feel part of the decision-making process and are invested in the future of Birmingham Children’s Trust.”

The report, with details in appendix 1 of which services will be transferred and which purchased, can be found here.

It will go before cabinet on Tuesday 25 July and if approved, formal consultation with staff will begin.
