Birmingham City Council is putting its customers firmly in the driving seat in their search for a new home.

This week saw the start of a newly improved scheme for people looking for a new home with Birmingham City Council or other social landlords in the city.

Customers who are registered on the council's housing waiting list can see all the properties that are available to rent and then express an interest in any that appeal to them. Up to six customers with the greatest housing need may be invited to view each property.

With properties advertised each week on the Birmingham Home Choice website and in a property newsletter format, it is easier for customers to know what properties are available, the special features of the property and information about the local area.

There is high demand for housing in Birmingham and growing numbers of people turn to the council for help each year. provides information on the type and number of properties that become available across the city along with the number of housing needs points previous properties have been let on. This can help people understand their likelihood of obtaining any particular property type across the city.

Social landlords Midland Heart and Family Housing Associations have joined the scheme offering a wider choice of properties and locations for people needing housing. They let all of their properties through Birmingham Home Choice.

Councillor John Lines, Cabinet Member for Housing said: “Birmingham Home Choice means a significant change for people looking for social housing and makes the process more transparent for everyone. I am delighted to be able to give our customers a greater say in where they live and the type of home they want to live in.”

Michelle Musgrave, Director of Customers and Communities at Midland Heart said “Choice is really important when you are looking for a home and this service allows our customers to get information easily and see the options available immediately.  It is a great step forward”.

Gail Newbold, Head of Neighbourhood Services at Family Housing Association said: “We are committed to offering choice for people seeking housing within the city and have seen the benefits that a choice based lettings system offers to our customers.  We anticipate that Birmingham Home Choice will extend these benefits and offer greater choice to more people across the City through a process that is easy and accessible to all.”
