Birmingham's Knowledge Quarter Forges Ahead with Landmark Agreement
Birmingham Knowledge Quarter Takes Shape
A significant collaboration agreement has been finalised by five organisations to establish the Birmingham Knowledge Quarter (B-KQ), a sprawling 210-hectare innovation district in the heart of the city. The project is predicted to generate over 22,000 highly skilled jobs and inject more than £3 billion annually into the regional economy's gross value added (GVA).
Key Players Unite
Signed on 27th January 2026, the agreement unites Bruntwood SciTech, Aston University, Birmingham City University, and Woodbourne Group, all with the backing of the West Midlands Combined Authority. The partnership aims to drive forward this ambitious project.
A Hub for Innovation
Strategically located in central Birmingham, next to the HS2 Curzon Street station, the Birmingham Knowledge Quarter sits at the core of the West Midlands Investment Zone. The development plans include:
- Over 580,000 square metres of commercial and innovation space
- More than 22,765 highly skilled jobs in sectors such as life sciences, digital health, fintech, and advanced manufacturing
- Over £3 billion in annual GVA for the regional economy
Significant Investment Boost
Woodbourne Group has also announced a collaboration with global investment manager Hines, potentially unlocking up to £400 million of additional investment into the district. This further strengthens the financial foundations of the Knowledge Quarter.
Joint Effort for Success
The formal Collaboration Agreement establishes shared governance, delivery frameworks, and investment structures. This ensures the project progresses smoothly and efficiently.
Transformative Potential
Professor Aleks Subic, Vice-Chancellor of Aston University, commented that the collaboration agreement marks a crucial moment for Birmingham. By combining the strengths of the city's universities, the private sector, and local government, a truly transformative innovation district is being created, set to drive economic growth and provide opportunities for future generations.
Economic Opportunity
It is understood that the Knowledge Quarter represents one of the most significant economic development opportunities in Birmingham's history. It is expected to create thousands of high-quality jobs, attract global investment, and solidify the city's position as a leading centre for innovation and research.
Region at the Forefront
West Midlands Combined Authority Mayor Richard Parker described the agreement as a bold statement of intent, positioning Birmingham and the wider region at the forefront of the UK's innovation economy.
Looking Ahead
Construction and development activity is expected to ramp up over the coming years as infrastructure around the HS2 Curzon Street station continues to advance.
