Press statement

Joint statement from Jim Kelly, Head of International and Local Events at Birmingham City Council and Elliot Hall, Co Chairman of Great City Attractions.

Jim Kelly said, “Birmingham City Council is delighted that planning permission has been granted today to allow the wheel to stay in Centenary Square beyond the initial allowance of 28 days.  This is a wonderful addition to the city's skyline and its visitor attractions, and it can now operate until 21 February as originally hoped for.

“Unfortunately, prior commitments in Centenary Square mean that the wheel is unlikely to stay beyond February.”

Elliot Hall further commented, “Great City Attractions were always aware that Centenary Square was only likely to be available to host the wheel until the end of February.  A planning application was put in to allow the wheel to remain for the intended three months, although the standard minimum amount of time to apply for planning permission is actually six months.

“All of our team are hugely appreciative of all the help and assistance we have received from Birmingham City Council officers to enable us to bring the wheel to the city at relatively short notice.  The Council has been very supportive of the project and, although we are expanding globally, we are delighted to be working so closely with our home city again, where our company is still based.”
