Birmingham youngsters are set to star on the international stage when the Jamaican Under-16 netball team arrives for a three-match series next week.

Just months before Usain Bolt and co complete their Olympic Games preparations here in Birmingham; the Jamaican team will tackle a team selected from across the city.

The Birmingham Jamaica Netball Event (sponsored by Johnsons Coaches) highlights the growing sporting links between Birmingham and Jamaica ahead this summer's Olympic Games.

A Birmingham under-16s netball team visited Jamaica last year and organiser Sue Bell said: “It's fantastic to see the Jamaican team make the return trip to Birmingham.

“We hope this will be the beginning of a long and successful sporting connection with Jamaica and events like this encourage more young people to get involved in sport in the city.

“With the similar athletics trip to Jamaica last year, the Jamaican Olympic team coming to Birmingham in July and the many cultural and business links developing this is an exciting time for the city.”

Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Cllr Anita Ward, will formally welcome the Jamaican team to the city at a civic reception on Wednesday 11 April. The first match of the series will take place that evening.

The matches take place at Birmingham Futsal Arena at the following times:

  • Wednesday 11 April – 7pm
  • Thursday 12 April – 7pm
  • Saturday 14 April – 11.45am
