04Birmingham sports fans have been urged to roar British gymnasts onto the Olympic Games when the Trampoline, Tumbling and Double Mini Trampoline World Championships bounce into town later this year.

The prestigious event, featuring around 650 competitors and officials from 40 countries, will be held at the National Indoor Arena from November 17-20.

And for medal hopefuls in the trampoline discipline, the Championships are a qualification event for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Team GB member and Olympic hopeful Amanda Parker hopes a partisan home crowd can help her secure a place in next year's Games.

The British No2 said: “This year the World Championships are extremely important because they are also the Olympic qualifiers. So we're all going to be trying really, really hard to get those Olympic places.

“Being in the Olympics is my dream, my ultimate goal. But competition is very fierce to get into the Olympic Games, so the more support we have behind us in Birmingham, the more it will spur us on to do well.”

Team mate Zara Mclean (Tumbling) added: “I think the fact we're competing in Birmingham will help. When we go away to other countries, the home crowd can make a real difference. We're looking for the same lift here in Birmingham and I'm sure the home crowd will really get behind us.”

Alex Foster (Double Mini Trampoline) agreed, adding: “The home crowd can just create a great atmosphere for us and that's going to make everyone on the team step up and raise their standards. We want to give the home crowd something to cheer.”

Tickets for the November's event are now on sale on 0844 581 4900 or www.theticketfactory.com and Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture Cllr Martin Mullaney is confident the people of Birmingham will back the gymnasts.

He said: “The Olympic Games almost start here as gymnasts battle it out for Olympic qualification. The gymnasts know from past experience that the people of Birmingham will give them great support and maybe we'll be cheering on an eventual Olympic medallist.”
