Birmingham to shine brightly on Olympic Torch Relay

By on 26/03/2012 in News

People in Birmingham will have the opportunity to share in the excitement of the Olympic Torch Relay as it arrives in Birmingham on Saturday 30 June.  The Olympic Torch will have an overnight stop in the city, before it leaves Birmingham on Sunday 1 July.

There will be plenty of opportunities for people in Birmingham to watch the torch relay and to join with friends, families and their communities to share in this once in a lifetime experience.

If anyone wants to know how to get involved with activity, performance, or community showcase, close to the torch relay route on Saturday or Sunday, they can voice their ideas and learn from others, at two community engagement evenings which have been organised by Birmingham City Council.

Community Engagement Meetings

The two Torch Relay community engagement information evenings are on Wednesday 28 March at Fox Hollies Leisure Centre, from 7:00pm to 8:00pm and Thursday 29 March at Summerfield Community Centre from 7:00pm to 8:00pm.  The public are welcome to come along and share their ideas and officers from the council will explain how they can get involved and a number of ways other community groups are celebrating.

People can also support local heroes by cheering on Birmingham torch bearers and celebrating their ‘moment to shine’ as they carry the torch through the streets of the city.

Councillor Martin Mullaney, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture said: “This is another great opportunity for Birmingham residents to get involved in the Olympic story without having to leave the city; people will remember these events for generations to come leaving a lasting legacy.

“I know local communities will come out to welcome the torch through the city’s streets and wave and applaud our local torch bearers who will have their moment to shine.”
