Birmingham's 'Plugged-In' for electric cars

By on 11/10/2013 in Cllr McKay, News, Video News

A project to provide 36 electric vehicle charging points across Birmingham has been completed, making low emission vehicles a more feasible option for city motorists.

Cllr James McKay, Cabinet Member for a Green, Safe and Smart City, said: “The widespread use of electric vehicles is still some distance away but they are starting to gain a foothold in the market.

“This means it is essential that we develop the infrastructure which will make their use as easy as possible. The new charging points are in a range of key locations, with many offering free parking for up to three hours.

“We are committed to offering the widest range of sustainable transport options possible, and will continue to explore how we can bring further innovations to Birmingham.”

In 2012 the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) designated eight 'Plugged in Places' areas in the UK and the Midlands area ('Plugged in Midlands') was one of these.

The Plugged in Places programme offers match-funding to consortia of businesses and the public sector to install electric vehicle charging points.

It is anticipated that Plugged in Midlands, managed by Cenex, will develop a regional network of more than 500 electric vehicle Charging Points across both the East and West Midlands.

Working with Plugged-In Midlands, Birmingham City Council has now implemented a network of 36 electric vehicle charge points at 18 locations across the city in on and off-street locations. This included upgrading the four locations originally installed as part of the CABLED project (an earlier electric vehicle trial across Birmingham and Coventry that saw 100 vehicles tested to learn about usage trends and habits).

The total cost of the installation of the 36 points is £161,375. This was delivered with the assistance of 60 per cent match funding through Plugged in Midlands (£96,825). The infrastructure was installed working in partnership with APT Controls and E.ON Energy.

To make use of the charge points that have been installed, electric vehicle drivers will need to become a member of Plugged-In Midlands.

Annual membership costs £24. Currently there is no charge for the electricity used but in some locations (i.e. in certain off-street car parks) the relevant parking charges will still apply.
