Birmingham’s recycling rate more than triples in 10 years

Cabinet Member for Transportation and Street Services, Cllr Len Gregory, today praised the residents of Birmingham for tripling the city's recycling rate in just 10 years but insisted there is still room for improvement.

Statistics released today by Recycle Now show recycling rates have increased by 26 per cent in the West Midlands since 1999; with over one million tonnes of waste in the region diverted from landfill in 2008-09.

To mark the latest significant chapter in the battle to waste less, recycling champions WRAP have produced a sculpture representing the Library of Birmingham – made from a wide range of materials that can be easily recycled in the Birmingham area.

Additional research also shows:

  • Only three per cent now feel recycling is a waste of time.
  •  Nearly all of us (96 per cent) are recycling at least one item.
  • 22 per cent take unwanted goods to charity shops.
  • Nearly one in ten (eight per cent) sell unwanted items online.

Recycling rates in Birmingham have increased from 15 per cent to 32 per cent in the last five years. Now Cllr Gregory is keen to encourage further improvements.

He said: “Today's figures clearly show the hard work of recent years is paying off. We are getting better at recycling; meaning the amount of waste we send to landfill is reducing.

“It's very encouraging to see that nearly everyone is recycling at least one material, but if everyone recycled the full range of materials collected such as plastic bottles, metals or textiles, we could really improve upon these figures.

“We know that there is more paper and cardboard still to be recovered and we need residents across the city to use their doorstep collections and other services to ensure a continued improvement.”

Laura Underwood from Recycle Now added: “In this country we are getting better at recycling. The amount of waste we send to landfill is constantly falling.”
