Young people in Kingstanding are being urged to take up boxing during the summer holidays to promote discipline, self-respect and a work ethic.

A boxing summer camp is targeting them under a joint project between Perry Barr Constituency Youth Activities Programme and Aston Amateur Boxing Club.

As well as providing young people with constructive leisure activities during the summer break, the scheme also aims to reduce anti-social behaviour.

Youngsters aged between 11 and 17 in Kingstanding are being invited on to the programme by Birmingham City Council's Youth Inclusion team and West Midlands Police.

They will be showing off their skills on Tuesday August 11th  and Wednesday August 12th between 2pm and 4pm on each day at the Aston Amateur Boxing Club in Perry Barr during which media are invited to attend and talk to organisers and participants.

Panikos Panayiotou, Sports Development Manager for the Perry Barr Constituency, said: “Some young people have little or no constructive activities in which to engage during the long summer holiday which is one of the reasons why we are running this programme.

“Boxing can teach invaluable lessons in life such as discipline, motivation and commitment. It can be a vehicle to steer young people away from anti-social behaviour.

“These are lessons that can help them throughout their lives to become healthy, successful and well-adjusted citizens.”

PC Paul Emms, School Link Officer for secondary schools in Oscott ward at West Midlands Police, said: “The project highlights the importance of introducing young people to constructive and positive uses of leisure time.”

The sessions run from 10.30am to 1pm Monday to Friday until August 28th and cost just £1 per session. They aim to provide support for young people and families locally by offering positive sporting activities at affordable prices.
