Building collapse on Walford Road

Tuesday 8 April – 10.30am update

The affected roads have now re-opened this morning, later than initially expected. The adjacent footpath will remain temporarily closed during the erection of scaffoliding on site. This concludes updates on this incident.

6.15pm updated statement

The immediate danger has been removed from the site  including remnants of the roof structure and loose masonry. The building owner is now clearing the footpath and Amey has been contacted to re-open the road at 7pm today (April 7).

2.30pm updated statement

An Acivico spokesperson said: “An Acivico surveyor was requested to attend the incident early this morning (1.30am on April 7) by the emergency services to advise on the extent of the danger. The first priority was to secure the site which meant closing the roads near to the building.

“The roof has collapsed and part of the first floor external walling is unsafe. At this stage it seems likely that apart from the roof, the building is saveable.

“The remaining roof and loose first floor brickwork is being removed. The necessary work will be completed as soon as is practically possible but it must be noted some of the works is having to be done by hand.

“Once the site is safe the affected roads in the area will re-open. Again, this will be as soon as possible.

“The current priority is making the site safe and we will work with other agencies in the coming days to establish what was taking place on site leading up to this incident.”
