Bull Ring Open Market is getting a £1m facelift
Birmingham’s historic Open Market is undergoing a £1m refurbishment, giving the site a fresher look for shoppers and traders.
Work on brightening the stalls, laying new tarmac floors and landscaping works is being carried out while the market is closed. However it will be business as usual for stallholders and shoppers Tuesdays to Saturdays.
A ‘living wall’ will also be installed around the compactor area, to keep traders’ packaging and waste hidden from public view.
Contractors are expected to use 240 tonnes of Tarmac to create a new floor for the market, with 45 workers spending in total 840 hours on site during this project, which is due to be completed in mid-July.
Amanda Prosser-Davies, Operations Manager for Bull Ring Markets, said: “Birmingham’s markets are a vital part of the city, which is reflected by the central location they will have as part of the new Smithfield development.
“This £1m refresh will make the Open Market a more inviting place for people to shop and a better environment for traders to sell their wares.”
